There’s this thing we do with Bible heroes where we make them out to be special people – like they didn’t need, sometimes, the same things we do. Take a look at Moses, for example. In Exodus 18, Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, shows up, and he tells him (in short) ‘you’re over-stretching yourself, get some help.’ Even though we serve a God of boundless energy, He still built rest into our design. And, like we said at the start of the month, we need to take him up on that. Where are you tiring yourself out? Where are you exhausting yourself? God has rest for you.
But more than that, He has wisdom to help us work restfully, every day. If you’re doing any kind of ministry (and we all are – each of us has the potential to be a spiritual guide), you’ll face heavy workloads like Moses did. Also, if you’re doing any kind of work at all. This is pretty much work skills basic 101, across the board. So, what did God provide for Moses? Companions. Co-workers. Buds. In our western culture, we undervalue friendship, and overvalue independence and gung-ho entrepreneurism. But God gives us a model, in Moses, for His design for work. To find strength in each other. To support others when they’re starting new personal projects and dreams. The call away from loneliness isn’t just for hanging-out times. It’s also for our careers and work. Have your friends got passions and goals that you could support? Have you got dreams that can only happen when you gather a team of quality people around? These things, too, are from God.
What now?
Get together with a couple of friends and share your goals and dreams. Look for ways you could help each other achieve those dreams, and create an action plan to help you work towards them.
