A toxic relationship is like a limb with gangrene: unless you amputate it the infection can spread and kill you. Without the courage to cut off what refuses to heal, you’ll end up losing a lot more. Until God changes the other person’s nature, they can have the power to affect and infect you. Jesus said ‘If your hand or foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away’ (Matthew 18:8 NIV). If you find yourself in a relationship that’s drawing you away from God instead of building you up, often the best plan is to distance yourself from that person. Of course, you should still pray for them and ask God to change their heart. But you shouldn’t let anything come between you and God. When you feel passionately about something but others don’t, it’s like trying to breakdance with someone who only knows how to do ballet. You’ll trip each other up and never get anywhere. Don’t get tied up with someone who doesn’t share your values and God-given goals. Some things can be resolved by talking, prayer, and teaching. But you can’t teach someone to care. If they don’t care they’ll pollute your environment, kill your creativity, and break your rhythm with constant complaints. Your personal growth – and in some cases your healing – will happen more quickly when you surround yourself with supportive people. That’s why it’s important to pray and ask God, ‘does this person belong in my life?’
What Now?
Is there someone in your life who somehow seems to manage to draw you away from God? Seriously ask God ‘does this person belong in my life?’
