God can speak to us whenever He wants to, so why does He say so often in Scripture that He’ll speak to us first thing in the morning? There are two reasons: 1) He wants to have first place in your life. He wants to be top on your list of priorities for the day. So before you make that first cup of coffee, or check your phone, or go galloping off into the day, learn to be still and allow God to give you insight and understanding as to what’s important for your day – and your life. You’ll be amazed at the solutions He gives you: the creative ideas, and the clear sense of guidance. You’ll find the promise really is true: ‘The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him (Psalm 37:23 NIV). And soon, you won’t want to go back to your old routine. 2) He wants a blank page to write on. Have you ever tried to talk to someone who’s distracted or preoccupied? After a while, you just want to give up. But when that person is really important to you, you try to pick a time when you know they’ll really listen. Well, you’re important to God and He wants to speak to you. Imagine what you’d miss out on if you didn’t hear what He has to say, or understand what He has in mind for you? One of the secrets of King David’s strength was this: ‘Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly’ (Psalm 5:3 NLT). So put listening to God at the top of your morning routine.
What Now?
When you wake up, spend some time talking and listening to God first thing, before you check your phone or make a cup of coffee.
