Princess Alice was Queen Victoria’s daughter. When her family contracted a dangerous disease called diphtheria, the doctors quarantined them and warned the princess to avoid contact so she didn’t get infected herself. But she couldn’t. When her youngest daughter Marie died, she tried to keep the news from her 10-year-old son Ernest, who was devoted to his younger sister, but eventually she had to tell him. He was so distraught at the news that Princess Alice broke the no contact rule and comforted him with hugs and kisses. But she caught the disease and within a few days, she died. What would compel a mother to risk her life for her child? Love! Now stand at the cross and ask what would lead Christ to do something even greater for us? Love! Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus, ‘I want you to know…Christ’s love…is too wonderful to be measured.’ We can trace Jesus’ greatest action to His greatest attribute – love. Perhaps the people who should have loved us, didn’t; and those who could have loved us, wouldn’t. Regardless of the cause, we might have been left wondering, ‘Does anybody love me?’ And today Christ is answering, ‘I do!’ The truth is, His love for us ‘is too wonderful to be measured’. Hymn writer Charles Gabriel wrote: ‘I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene, And wonder how he could love me, a sinner, condemned, unclean. How marvellous! How wonderful! And my song shall ever be: How marvellous! How wonderful! Is my Saviour’s love for me!’ God couldn’t love you more than He does right now, and that will never change.
