Life rarely works out exactly the way we hope, plan, or think it will. When Job lost everything, he said, ‘I don’t have the strength to endure. I have nothing to live for… I am utterly helpless, without any chance of success’ (Job 6:11, 13 NLT). But in the end, Job got back twice as much as he had lost. But the experiences and hardships he had gone through totally changed his attitude towards God. He said, ‘I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted…My ears have heard of you but now my eyes have seen you’ (Job 42:2, 5 NIV). Job discovered that God is sovereign. He isn’t our servant – we’re His servants, and we must obey His Word if we want to be sure of walking in His blessing – but the final, ultimate outcome of everything rests in His hands, not ours. Many of us struggle with giving up control. We want to keep control over our circumstances, our goals, plans, relationships, and everything else that concerns us. We might fear the outcome if we’re not able to micromanage every fine detail, or it might be a rebellion against God, especially when we’ve prayed and not got the result we hoped for. Sometimes it’s the result of growing up in a chaotic environment and resolving never to repeat the experience. We might think we deserve to have control of our lives because our intelligence, skills, experience, or other achievements qualify us. But It isn’t true. God enabled us to do everything that we’ve done. Paul wrote, ‘But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favour on me’ (1 Corinthians 15:10 NLT). God is in control – and honestly, it’s a blessing to be in such safe hands.
