We must constantly reaffirm our scriptural foundations, the basic truths that Jesus’ church is built on. Things like: The infallibility of the Bible; Christ’s virgin birth; His sinless life; His atoning death; His resurrection and His work as a mediator on our behalf; our need to be saved and filled with the Holy Spirit; and the assignment to carry the gospel to every part of the earth and announce that one day, Christ will return to rule and reign. These truths are non-negotiable! We might think that refusing to compromise on these points makes us narrow minded. But think about it this way: the law of gravity is narrow minded! The laws of mathematics and physics are narrow minded! Paul was narrow minded: ‘But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed’ (Galatians 1:8 NKJV). It only takes one tiny crack in our resolve, and suddenly we find we’re compromising on everything. That’s why Jude wrote: ‘defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people. I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvellous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ’ (Jude v.3-4 NLT). Pay attention to the words ‘the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints’. Our methods of reaching the world can and will change, but our message must never change. We must never compromise on God’s Word.
