Have you ever experienced God speaking to you? Sometimes we can think that God speaking just happened in the Bible, that it doesn’t happen to people nowadays. But the problem isn’t that God no longer speaks to us; it’s that we don’t recognise His voice. God still speaks today, just not always in the ways we expect Him to. We expect a big sign or a loud voice, but while we’re waiting for those, we can miss what God’s saying to us right now. God said to Elijah: ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by’ (1 Kings 19:11 NIV). The Bible says: ‘Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”’ (1 Kings 19:11-13 NIV). God was in the whisper. A gentle whisper. And He can speak to us like that too. He can often speak through our thoughts, a family member, a friend, a pastor, a change in our circumstances, a verse in the Bible which we’ve read hundreds of times, a great book, or in the quietness where He simply fills our hearts with perfect peace. We just need to be listening for His gentle whisper in our lives.
