Some people think God is against us having money, or that He doesn’t want us to have very much of it. But the Bible says, ‘He will increase what you have, so…you can give even more to those in need. You will be blessed in every way, and you will be able to keep on being generous’ (vv. 10-11 CEV). We need to get God involved in our finances. We can ask Him to guide our money choices and to give us wisdom in how we spend it, save it and give it. And by doing that we can invest even more in a personal relationship with Him and invite Him into every part of our lives. When we get into a crisis, whether financial or anything else, we ask God to help us. When we’re in desperate situations, we’re desperate for God’s help. But wouldn’t it be better to invite Him in and ask Him to guide us, on things like our money, so that we avoid getting into those tricky situations in the first place. Jesus tells us that we can’t serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24). We can’t try and live a life with both of those at the top – one must take priority. And if we make God the priority, and ask for His wisdom, our relationship with money will be much healthier. Putting God first doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll be rich, or poor for that matter; what it does mean is that we will have godly wisdom as to how to look after our money, so we don’t waste it, but use it in line with God’s heart.

What Now?

Take some time to look at how you’re spending your money. Ask God to show you where you’re not spending it wisely and then make some changes.
