The news often contains health advice. We’re encouraged to eat healthier and cut back on foods that aren’t so good for us. We’re told which foods are best to eat and which ones we should probably be avoiding. But when it comes to spiritual health, there’s something we should definitely be doing. Just as we can’t thrive physically without eating well every day, we can’t thrive spiritually without a daily intake of God’s Word. Everything we need for living a joyful and victorious Christian life is found in our Bibles. ‘By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself…he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires’ (vv. 3-4 NLT). What did Jesus use to overcome Satan’s temptations in the wilderness? He used the Scriptures because He knew Satan has no defence against them. Do you want to grow in your character, in your relationships, and everywhere else? ‘Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do’ (Joshua 1:8 NLT). If we make reading the Bible a priority in our lives, we will start to see things change. It may have been written a long time ago but it’s just as ‘alive and active’ today (Hebrews 4:12 NIV).
What Now?
Choose a book, chapter or verse of the Bible and commit to studying it every day for a week. Read it, pray about it, read other people’s views on it and then see what God is telling you through it.
