God spoke into our darkness twice in the Bible. In Genesis He said, ‘Let there be light’ (1:14 NIV). And in John’s Gospel, Jesus declared, ‘Light has come into the world’ (3:19 NIV). To walk with God, we have to reject the ways of darkness and walk in the light. And that means confronting areas of sin and bringing them out into the open, into the light. Sometimes we keep things that we’re doing secret because we don’t want to stop doing them. Other times, we keep them secret because we’re ashamed and don’t want anybody to find out what we’ve done. But secrecy is the ideal environment for sin to grow until ultimately, we’re taken captive by thoughts, actions, and habits. ‘If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth’ (1 John 1:6 NIV). Once we step into the light everything changes. So we need to be confessing our sins to God, and, if necessary, to a trusted friend or mentor who can pray with us. Then through God’s strength we’re able to reclaim our power to overcome sin and live victoriously. Once we’ve turned on the light, the things of darkness begin to die. Their grip loosens, and freedom dawns. Each time sin comes knocking at our door we need to bring it into the light immediately, where it’s clearly revealed, and we can start dealing with it. When we do, fellowship with God will be ours and our sins will be washed away. The Bible says, ‘If we walk in the light…the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.’

What now?
Wait for it to go dark. Turn out all the lights and in the darkness, tell God about anything you’ve done wrong today. Then turn the lights on. Ask Him to help you deal with those things. Thank Him for helping you bring them to light.
